Light House dominate as East Africa Junior Championships conclude in Mombasa

Players from Mombasa-based Light House Chess Club dominated in the youth category of the East Africa Junior Championships that ended on Sunday, January 11, at Aga Khan Academy.
Jamie Obora Kanango, one of the highest-rated players in the youth category with a rating of 1861, collected 6.5 points to emerge as the winner.

He drew with Mich Jayden in the last round, but it was still enough to grant him top honors in this category.
Gichana Keyshaw, another player from Light House, finished in second position after collecting six points.
He beat Joy Muthoni in the last round to ensure his second position.
Genevieve Mashaw, playing in her first tournament since representing the country at the Africa Youth Chess Championships, finished in third place with 5.5 points. Mashaw is also from Light House Chess Club.
Kaloki Zuri from Mavens Chess Club could only manage a fifth-place finish despite her 1861 rating, making her the top seed in this category.
In the under-12 category, Gichugu Wanjiru, another player who represented the country at the Africa Youth Chess Championships in Zimbabwe, won with 6.5 points.
This was Wanjiru's first local tournament after her fifth-place finish at the African event.
Anish Shah from Oshwal Academy finished in second place with six points, while Noah Bukulumpagi from Uganda managed a third-place finish.
Ramadhan Mborifuko from Uganda claimed the top spot in the under-10 category after collecting seven points.
Elsewhere, 10 Kenyan players have received conditional titles after their sterling performance during the Africa Youth Chess Championships in Zimbabwe.
Cyprian Mbaabu, the current under-16 African champion, has been awarded a conditional Fide Master (FM) title upon attaining a 2100 rating.
Apart from that, he has received an International Master (IM) norm.
Davidson Mugo Waweru, who won silver in the boys under-14 category, received a Candidate Master (CM) title upon reaching a rating of 2000.
Others who have been awarded conditional titles are-Cassidy Maina Elizabeth - WFM title, Conditional 1900 rating, Lucy Ndula Fantalis - WCM title, Conditional 1800 rating.
Ryan Kimani Danson -CM title Conditional 2000 rating, Winnie Kaburo - WCM title Conditional 1800 rating, Nathaniel Manyeki - CM title Conditional 2000 rating, Amanda Breetalizah - WCM title Conditional 1800 rating and 30 games
Gene Pence Barasa Mukhwana - CM title, Conditional 2000 rating and 30 games
Awuor Jayne - WCM title Conditional 1800 rating and 30 games.
